Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency

Message from Director General

所長Fisheries resources can continue to be used into the future in a sustainable manner if we avoid overfishing while enjoying them as the blessings of nature. To that end, it is essential to survey the conditions of various resources and assess how much catch is effective and sustainable. At the same time, a biological understanding of fisheries resources and the productivity of oceans that supports those resources is also necessary. We also consider it to be an important activity to promptly and efficiently collect and analyze data concerning fisheries resources.

Since the amended Fishery Act was put into force in December 2020, "resource assessment" has become a major policy measure to realize appropriate management of fisheries resources. Furthermore, under the Basic Plan for Fisheries, which was determined by the Cabinet in March 2022, the government is required to steadily promote resource management based on scientific evidence while taking into consideration changes in the marine environment. The Fisheries Resources Institute has two research and development organizations, the Fisheries Stock Assessment Center, which is responsible for appropriate management of fisheries resources and resource assessment that forms the scientific basis for developing the fisheries industry into a growth industry, and the Salmon Research Department, which is intended to promote the recovery and management of salmon resources. The Fisheries Resources Institute collects scientific knowledge using fishery survey vessels and conducts analysis and research based on its high level of professional expertise concerning fisheries resources by using data obtained from the fisheries industry and markets.

Under the ever-changing natural environment and social situation, the Fisheries Resources Institute will promote research and development for maximum and sustainable use of fisheries resources, spread the benefits thereof widely to society, and conduct scientific activities to ensure that abundant fisheries resources can continue to be consumed into the future.
