Fisheries Stock Assessment Center

The Fisheries Stock Assessment Center is primarily responsible for conducting fisheries stock assessments of both domestic and international fisheries resources, in order to ensure their appropriate management under the new fisheries policy and in accordance with international standards. The Center is also engaged in associated research and development to enhance the efficacy of stock assessment methodologies and results outlined below.

  • Collect and analyze fisheries data
  • Advance analysis and assessment methods
  • Update life-history and ecological information
  • Analyze and utilize genetic information
  • Investigate relation between marine environment and fisheries resources including dynamics of radioactive substances in the ocean and their impacts on aquatic organisms
  • Investigate marine ecosystem and socio-economic activities related to fisheries

The Center is headquartered in Yokohama and has six locations throughout Japan: Kushiro, Hachinohe, Shiogama, Niigata, Hatsukaichi and Nagasaki. It also utilizes eight research vessels to address fisheries issues effectively and efficiently across different regions and research fields.
