About Fisheries Resources Institute

Role of the Fisheries Resources Institute

The Fisheries Resources Institute (FRI) takes on a central role in fish stock assessment, the scientific basis of the new system of fishery resource management. The FRI conducts research and development to address the changes in both fishery resources and the oceanographic  environment caused by climate change and the problems with declining fishery catches. Further, the FRI conducts research and development on stock enhancement techniques of Pacific salmon to restore return rates to coastal areas and rivers, where unprecedented declines in catches have been observed. The FRI also implements artificial hatching and stocking juveniles of Pacific salmon to maintain the populations in Japan.
