Highly Migratory Resources Division
Japan uses a variety of fishing gear around the world and is responsible for ensuring the sustainable use of highly migratory species, such as skipjack, tunas, billfish, sharks, Pacific saury, and demersal fish, and whales in the open ocean. The main role of the Highly Migratory Resources Division is to support the scientific committee of the international Regional Fisheries Management Organization by providing the best available scientific information and conducting research and development activities. This includes stock assessments, recruitment monitoring, research vessel surveys, and the conservation and management of bycatch species such as seabirds, sea turtles, and pinnipeds.
