The predecessor of the National Research and Development Agency, Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency can be traced back to 1897, when the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce's Fisheries Inspection Station and the Fisheries Training Institute Testing and Research Department were established. It is an institution that conducts research and education specializing in fisheries, which is rare in the world in terms of scale and history, and even conducts social implementation.

As an independent administrative agency, since its establishment as the Fisheries Research Center in 2001, which integrated nine research institutes belonging to the Fisheries Agency, it has been successively integrated with the Japan Marine Fishery Research Center (JAMARC)the Japan Sea-Farming Association (JASFA), The FRA consolidates the National Salmon Resources Center (NASREC), and the National Fisheries University.

In order to contribute to the stable supply of marine products and the sound development of the fisheries industry, we continue our activities based on the basic principle of promoting R&D and human resource development in the fisheries field, maximizing the results of our research, and giving back to society.

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has set medium- to long-term goals for the five-year period from 2021 to 2025, and we have formulated and are working on the 5th medium- to long-term plan as a corporation. Based on these medium- to long-term goals and plans, we will work to maximize the results of research and development by prioritizing research topics and to enhance the content of education in human resource development.

This fiscal year, in addition to the establishment of a department to strengthen information system management (PMO (Portfolio Management Office) at the end of the last fiscal year, the establishment of the Research Strategy Department at the headquarters to strategically carry out research and development, and a system to strengthen regional cooperation will be put in place.

We will contribute to the sustainable development of Japan's fisheries industry based on science and technology, and to make it a growth industry, so that we can eat delicious fish forever.
