(Ho and Last, 2013; Ho et al., 2013, 2015),本標本は誘引突起溝が暗色で深く窪むことからChaunax pictus種群(3種を含む)に属する.

Description  Head and body globose, somewhat depressed, conical posteriorly. Mouth large, nearly vertical. Jaws, vomer, and palatine with tooth bands. Illicium on snout short, stout, retractable in deeply concave illicial trough. Esca with numerous long cirri, blackish above (mixed with white, gray or dark cirri) and white below. Skin very loose, densely covered with fine spinoid scales. Some thread-like dermal flaps present on snout around illicial trough, very sparse on body. Lateral-line system grooved, well developed. When fresh, body uniformly reddish or orange with many irregular yellowish spots and reddish markings dorsally, white ventrally. Illicium and illicial trough deep red to deep orange (blackish in preserved specimens).

Distribution  Western South Indian Ocean (Madagascar Ridge). Benthic in 637–950 m depth (present study).

Remarks  Chaunax is composed of 22 species, subdivided into three species-groups (Ho et al., 2013, 2015). The present specimens belong to the Chaunax pictus species-group (3 species) by sharing a dark illicial trough that is deeply concave. They are most similar to C. penicillatus McCulloch, 1915, which occurs in the Indo-West Pacific (including the study area), in having the unique illicial trough and esca with numerous cirri, but differ in the counts of pectoral-fin rays (14 vs. 11–13), gill-rakers on the first arch (11–13 vs. 13–14), and lateral-line neuromasts of BI (31–32 vs. 35–40), and in illicial length (3.6–5.5 % SL vs. 1.5–2.2 % SL), features of the illicium and esca, and other characters (Ho et al., 2013; this study). The present specimens are distinguished from Chaunax pictus Lowe, 1846 and Chaunax stigmaeus Fowler, 1946 of the same species-group by a few of characters of the illicium and coloration (Caruso, 1989). The present specimens may represent an undescribed species, but further research is needed.
