(Caires and Figueiredo, 2011).

Description  Body elongate, cylindrical anteriorly, slightly laterally compressed posteriorly. Head small, its length about 1/7 of TL. Mouth moderate in size, posterior end of upper jaw beyond vertical through mid-eye. Upper jaw longer than lower jaw, a premaxillary tooth patch visible when mouth closed. Snout protruding beyond lower jaw, rather pointed, its length longer than eye diameter. Eye elliptical and relatively small. Anterior nostril with short tube and located near snout tip; posterior nostril elliptical and located just forward of eye. Small conical teeth arranged on both jaws, forming tooth bands; 2–3 rows on maxilla; tooth band of lower jaw anteriorly broad (4–6 rows), posteriorly narrow (2–3 rows). A premaxillary tooth band elliptical, continuing to vomerine tooth band. Gill opening small, just below base of pectoral fin. Dorsal-fin origin above central part of pectoral fin. Pectoral fin short, pelvic fin absent. Anus located anterior to midpoint of body. Outer margin of caudal fin rounded. Scales absent, body surface covered with minute, hair-like, epidermal processes. Head and side of body brown, abdomen light brown. Dorsal and anal fins dark brown.

Distribution  South Indian Ocean, South Africa, southwestern Atlantic (Brazil, Argentina), southeastern Atlantic (Namibia), southeastern Pacific (Patagonian coast of Chile) (Caires and Figueiredo, 2011).

Remarks  The fine hair-like epidermal processes covering the body characterize this species (and congeners). The genus Bassanago Whitley, 1948 comprises four valid species with B. albescens and B. nielseni (Karmovskaya, 1990) distributed in the Indian Ocean (Caires and Figueiredo, 2011). Bassanago albescens can be distinguished from B. nielseni by having more total vertebrae (162–173 vs. B. nielseni 150–159). Morphometric and meristic differences were reported in specimens of this species from the eastern Atlantic Ocean and other areas (Caires and Figueiredo, 2011). Characters of the two specimens in this study agreed with those of specimens of B. albescens from the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
