分 布 インド・西太平洋および大西洋.陸棚および島棚斜面の水深275–1785 mCompagno, 1984; Sousa et al., 2009

Description  Body thick and elongated. Snout greatly elongated, flattened, its length greater than distance from mid-point of mouth to pectoral-fin origin. Five rather large gill openings. Mouth relatively small. Teeth on both jaws bladelike; teeth on lower jaw broader than those on upper jaw. Two dorsal fins; both fins with grooved spines; spine of first dorsal fin shorter than that of second dorsal fin. First dorsal fin relatively short and low. Anal fin absent. Caudal peduncle short. Ventral portion of caudal peduncle with subcaudal keel. Body uniformly dark brown; fins blackish.

Distribution  Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. Found on the continental and insular slopes in depths of 275–1785 m (Compagno, 1984; Sousa et al., 2009).

Remarks  Measurements generally followed Compagno (1984). This species can be easily distinguished from all its congeners that co-occur in the southwestern Indian Ocean, including Deania calcea (Lowe, 1839), by having a subcaudal keel on the ventral portion of the caudal-peduncle (absent in the congeners). It is a relatively small Deania, attaining about 110 cm TL. Biological information of the species from the Madeira Archipelago was reported in detail by Sousa et al. (2009).
